Muito famosa nos tempos do seu aparecimento, teve mais tarde algum declínio, pelo aparecimento das correntes veristas, deixando de estar na moda o tipo de canto ornamentado e leve próprio desse primeiro romantismo.
Somente nos anos seguintes á II Guerra Mundial, ressurge o interesse pelo estilo de canto desta época.Mais uma vez é preciso falar em Maria Callas, responsável por esse ressurgimento. De novo acertou na personagem de Lucia ao recuperar o dramatismo da protagonista, dando consistência a passagens tais como a ária “Regnava nel silenzio”, pela sua dificuldade para os sopranos mais ligeiros.
Lucia é um drama escocês, passado na época medieval, baseado numa obra de Walter Scott The bride of Lammermoor escrita em 1819, com adaptação de Salvatore Cammarano
